By the third day of Onam, the festive rhythm has already taken hold. Chodhi, falling on 30th August 2025, is a day when colors bloom in every corner of Kerala, filling homes, courtyards, and hearts with joy. It is a continuation of the Onam story, each day adding more meaning, more beauty, and more reasons to celebrate.
The Significance of Chodhi
On Chodhi, families add the third layer of flowers to the Pookalam, Kerala’s famous floral carpet. While Atham began with a single circle of yellow Thumba flowers and Chithira added more vibrancy, Chodhi takes it a step further by expanding both the size and variety of the design. The Pookalam begins to reflect the collective creativity of the household, with every flower and color symbolizing abundance, harmony, and unity.
Chodhi also carries a deeper spiritual meaning. The growing floral design mirrors the idea that as each day passes, life becomes more enriched with blessings, gratitude, and love.
Rituals and Joyful Moments
Traditionally, children rise early to collect flowers from nearby gardens or fields. There is a sense of excitement in competing with siblings and neighbors to gather the freshest blooms. Families bond as they carefully place each petal, transforming the Pookalam into a radiant piece of living art.
Chodhi is also when the air in Kerala becomes charged with anticipation. Markets buzz with families shopping for festive outfits and kitchen essentials, while cultural rehearsals for dances like Thiruvathira and performances of folk songs intensify. It is a day of preparation not just for the eyes but also for the heart.
Bringing Chodhi to Mumbai
Even in Mumbai, far from Kerala’s flower fields, the spirit of Chodhi thrives. A single marigold garland, a small bowl of fresh petals, or even decorating the home with vibrant fabrics can capture the joy of this day. What matters most is the togetherness Chodhi inspires—families and friends uniting in celebration.
At Just Kerala, we embrace this spirit of color and community. The restaurant comes alive with festive décor and the promise of authentic flavors that bring Kerala’s traditions to life. Every plate served is like a Pookalam of taste—layered, colorful, and filled with love.
Merlin and I always find that Chodhi is a beautiful reminder that life’s richness comes from its many colors—just as Kerala’s culture is a blend of traditions, flavors, and emotions.
